How do I ensure my overage eligible dependant(s) continue to be covered under my OSSTF Benefits plan?

April 13, 2025

Dependent children are eligible for coverage under the OSSTF Benefit Plans if under age 21 OR as an over-age student under age 25 if they are a full-time student at an accredited school, college, university or educational institution.

If your child(ren) is turning the maximum age as defined by the terms of the OSSTF Benefits Plans, then one month before this birthday, you will receive an email to confirm the student status for your child(ren).

  1. Click  Log in on the top right-hand corner of the website.
  2. Select  Health and Dentalfrom the drop-down menu.
  3. Once you have logged in, click  My Benefits.
  4. Complete the activity listed here

If you do not complete the activity by the provided deadline date, coverage for your dependant(s) will end.

After the initial confirmation of student status is completed, you will receive a reminder at the end of every school year to confirm the student status for your child(ren) for the upcoming school year (if applicable). If you have an over-age student covered under your plan, you must let OTIP know every year that they will be attending school in the fall and ongoing coverage for them is therefore required. You will receive reminders starting in June. If you do not complete the confirmation, benefits for your over-age student will end on the earliest of August 31 or the date that your dependent turns age 25.

What If you have a disabled child:

A child is considered incapacitated if he or she is incapable of engaging in any substantially gainful activity and is dependant on the member for support, maintenance and care, due to a mental or physical disability.

A child, who is incapacitated or disabled on the date he or she reaches the maximum age (21 or 25) when coverage would normally end, may continue to be eligible for coverage under the OSSTF Benefit Plans as an overage disabled dependant (OADD). However, the child must have been covered under the OSSTF ELHT Benefits Plan prior to that date.

An application for over-age disabled dependant coverage must be completed within 31 days of the dependant reaching the maximum age when coverage would normally end and involves having an Overage Disabled Dependant Coverage Form completed by you and an attending physician submitted to OTIP. Medical underwriting will review the completed form and determine their eligibility as an Overage disabled dependant. OTIP may request ongoing written proof of the child’s condition as often as reasonably necessary. For more information, please contact OTIP Benefit Services at 1-866-783-6847.
